In 1965, as Soeharto's troops closed in on East Java, Ibu Lestari and her husband left their 4 children with relatives and fled. Eventually, they were turned in by neighbors and in 1968, she was imprisoned in a women's prison in Malang, East Java. She remained in detention for 11 years.
