In a 2005 interview, Lestari had this exchange with a journalist:

"Do you remember the events of 1965?"

"I remember them every day"

"Does that mean you are holding a grudge?"

"No, child. Grudges just ruin your life."

"Then what do you want?"

"Admission. An official admission of the slaughter that occured in Indonesia under Soeharto. I don't have much longer to live, and I will dedicate the rest of my life to making sure that this happens."
