1965: The year that never ended
On September 31, 1965, General Soeharto led a military coup that overthrew President Sukarno's power. In the next three years, Soerharto's troops marched across Java and Bali, arming citizens and killing an estimated 500,000 to 1,000,000 suspected "communists." More than 35,000 activists, community leaders and journalists were arrested and jailed.
