But the tragedy doesn't end there. Upon release, they were issued ID cards stamped with "former political prisoner." They were required to regularly report in to the police, and seek permission to travel. They suffered tremendous stigma and rejection in the community, and had difficulty finding work. Many chose not to re-unite with their families, so that their children would not suffer the same stigma they did. Soeharto wrote his own version of history, and former political prisoners were forbidden to tell their stories.
